Hundreds of young adults are uplifted and inspired each summer during their time at Camp Olson. Nurtured by inspired leaders and immersed in nature’s beauty, teens and young adults at Camp Olson are afforded the opportunity look inward and discover themselves. Our Leadership Development Programs cultivate young leaders through intense curricula that challenge the mind, body, and spirit of all participants. At Camp Olson we build great leaders who apply themselves in their lives, their schools, and their communities.
Leadership Development Outcomes
Counselor In Training (CIT) Program : 16-17
The ever-popular Camp Olson CIT Program offers campers the ultimate training experience for those who aspire to work as a camp counselor in the future. CITs will spend over a week on the Superior Hiking Trail, bonding and pushing their limits. The lessons learned on the trail will be immediately put to use upon return to camp through leadership training and instruction in each of Camp Olson’s program areas. This is a highly competitive and space-limited program.
Leadership In Training I (LIT) Program: Ages 13-15
This program is catered to the older camper who seeks to get a little more from their Camp Olson experience. Through hands-on training and group initiatives, the Camp Olson LIT program focuses on cooperation, self-discovery, and leadership skills. Each LIT I session is 2 weeks in length including a 4-5 day canoe trip to Voyageurs National Park and a day trip to a climbing wall. This first leadership experience provides coed interaction while preserving a single gender trip and experiences. LIT groups may meet up during their trip to share a campsite. LIT campers spend their mornings with their fellow LITs gaining leadership skills through an array of team building and thought provoking activities. Afternoons are sometimes free choice and sometimes have additional programming. LITs will leave with a greater sense of themselves and the necessary skills to be a leader.
Leadership In Training II (LIT): Ages 14-16
Similar to our LIT program in focus, LIT II sessions are more trip-based including a 7-8 day outbound trip. This program is a co-ed experience. LIT II campers can chose between a 7-8 day canoeing trip, or a 8-9 day backpacking trip. Campers will spend their first few days planning and preparing both mentally and physically for their adventure with our experienced and caring staff. Along the way, they will gain experience and training in Leadership, Leave No Trace camping, cooperation, and wilderness survival. While at Camp Olson, LIT II campers will stay in large tents at our Adventure Outpost near our Nature Center.
Canoeing: LIT II campers will be able to spend 7-8 days in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area exploring countless lakes and the serene beauty. When it comes to travel by canoe, the BWCA is the pinnacle of camping experiences.
Backpacking: LIT II campers can also choose to join us on Isle Royale for a Backpacking trip. Backpackers will experience expansive views of Lake Superior while they hike from one primitive campsite to the next. This is the perfect chance to gain more experience on foot before joining the CIT program in the years to come.
